8 curated tools in this category

Security tools work best when they stay invisible. A WireGuard-based VPN connects your devices across untrusted networks, and a firewall like Little Snitch only speaks up when an app wants to phone home. This category gathers tools for network and security work, from a self-hosted VPN, through traffic control on the Mac, to monitoring whole servers with Wazuh.

The selection is small and curated, with a clear open source focus: for software you trust with your network traffic, auditable source code is an argument in itself. What sets WireGuard apart from classic VPN protocols, and what to look for in security tools, is covered in the guide below the tools.

What are security and network tools?

This category covers two fields that interlock in practice. Network tools establish secure connections, above all VPN solutions based on WireGuard, the modern VPN protocol with a lean codebase and fast connection setup. Security tools watch and inspect: they control network traffic, collect log data, or scan websites for weaknesses. What both share is that trust is the central currency. Open source has a structural advantage here, because the code can be audited independently.

Typical use cases

Your own VPN instead of a provider subscription: NetBird connects your devices through a WireGuard-based overlay network, as if they sat in the same LAN. That lets you reach your home server or NAS securely from anywhere, without opening ports and without entrusting your traffic to a commercial VPN provider.

Controlling outgoing traffic: Little Snitch shows on the Mac which app talks to which server and when, and blocks connections according to your rules.

Monitoring servers: Wazuh is an open source SIEM: it collects log data from servers and endpoints, detects suspicious patterns and raises alarms. Running it takes real onboarding effort and pays off once you are responsible for several systems.

What matters when choosing

Trust model: A VPN shifts trust, it does not remove it. With a commercial provider your traffic runs through their servers; with a self-hosted WireGuard setup, only through your own.

Operating effort: A SIEM like Wazuh is not an install-and-forget tool; neglected alerts dull the senses and get ignored. Small setups are often better served by a lean VPN plus a firewall than by heavyweight monitoring.

Auditability: With security software, what counts is who has reviewed the code. WireGuard, at a few thousand lines of code, has been independently audited several times. You can expect the same transparency from the tools built on top of it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between WireGuard and OpenVPN?

WireGuard is the much younger VPN protocol: a small codebase and modern cryptography. In practice it connects faster and delivers higher throughput, especially on mobile devices. OpenVPN has been around longer, is more flexible to configure and also gets through restrictive corporate networks. For new setups WireGuard is almost always the better choice; solutions like NetBird build directly on it.

Do I need a VPN at home?

Inside your own home network, no. A VPN of your own becomes interesting once you want to reach devices at home while traveling, for example a NAS or home server, or want to route your traffic in public Wi-Fi through a tunnel whose endpoint you control yourself.

The selection above is deliberately compact at seven tools and will keep growing. The core, secure remote access via WireGuard and control over your own traffic, is already covered.
